Imsouane from Agadir by Car: Route, Time, Surf Tips (2026 Guide)
Imsouane is 90 km north of Agadir — around 1h45 by car on the coastal N1 plus a short local road down to the bay. It's Morocco's most photographed longboard wave (the "Magic Bay" right-hander runs for over 500 metres on a good day) and one of the calmest fishing villages on the Atlantic coast. The route step by step
- Agadir Al Massira Airport (AGA) → head north on the N1 towards Agadir city.
- Bypass Agadir via the coastal road (avoid the city centre — signs "Essaouira / N1 Nord" take you around).
- Aourir — 12 km north of Agadir. "Banana Village", named after the banana plantations. Roadside cafés if you need a first stop.
- Tamraght — 17 km. First real surf town; several surf schools + hostels.

- Aghroud / Tamri — the road bends inland briefly through argan forests. Look for tree-climbing goats (real ones are working, not the tourist-trap staged ones — you can spot the difference).
- Cap Rhir — 40 km. Small headland with lighthouse. Panorama stop.
- Tamri — 60 km. Village with basic fuel + small shops. Last easy stop before Imsouane.
- Turn left onto road 6602 at the sign marked "Imsouane" — the road descends 4 km through dry hills toward the bay.
- Arrive Imsouane — parking is along the harbour road or in the small paid lot near the surf schools (~20 MAD/day).
What to do in Imsouane
- Watch the longboarders ride Magic Bay from the harbour wall — even non-surfers find this hypnotic.
- Learn to surf or rent a board — multiple schools right on the bay: Imsouane Surf Camp, Amouage Imsouane, and a handful of small local operators.
- Eat fresh grilled fish at the port — pick from the morning catch, they cook it while you wait. Around 60–120 MAD per person including bread + salad.
- The Cathedral — a natural rock arch north of the village, walkable at low tide.
- Sunset from the cliff walk — 30-minute path along the headland north of the bay.
Which rental car for the Imsouane drive
The road is 100% paved and mostly straight — no mountain sections, no gravel. Any car in our fleet handles it:

Combining Imsouane with other destinations
- Day trip: AGA → Imsouane → back to Agadir. Very doable in one day, especially if you leave AGA by 09:00.
- 2-day surf loop: AGA → Taghazout (overnight) → Imsouane (day) → Agadir. Combines both major surf zones.
- Coastal extension: Imsouane → Essaouira is 85 km further north on the N1 (~1h30). A logical continuation.

Practical tips
- Fuel up before you leave Agadir — the N1 has stations at Aourir + Tamri, but they close by 21:00. Full tank at pickup means you don't need to stop until the return.
- The road speed limit changes frequently as you pass through villages (30-50-70-90 km/h). Watch for the Gendarmerie radar around Aourir + Cap Rhir.
- Cash: bring 300-500 MAD in small notes for parking + food + surf-school day passes — card acceptance is limited in Imsouane.
- Accommodation: book at least a night ahead in peak surf season (Nov-Mar). Small village, limited rooms.
- Water and snacks: restaurants in the village but no supermarket. Bring your own if you have specific dietary needs.
