The drive from Agadir to Marrakech is one of the most rewarding road trips in Morocco. Three hours on a smooth modern motorway, argan-tree forests on either side, the High Atlas peaks rising in the distance — and at the end, the chaos and color of Jemaa el-Fnaa. The Route Step by Step
From Agadir Al Massira Airport, head north. Follow signs for "Marrakech / Casablanca / A7." You'll be on the motorway within 15 minutes of leaving the airport. The A7 is well-maintained, two lanes each direction, gentle curves through the foothills.
5 Stops Worth Making
- Argan tree goats (km 30-50) — yes, real goats really do climb the trees. Pull over for the photo, but be aware some "spots" are tourist traps where you're charged for a photo.
- Aire de repos Imi-Mqorn — clean rest stop, fuel, decent café for mint tea and a quick break.
- Taroudant detour — add 30 minutes to detour to "the grandmother of Marrakech," a walled city with markets and zero crowds.
- Argana viewpoint (km 130) — the High Atlas opens up dramatically here. Worth a 5-minute photo stop.
- Chichaoua truck stop — last serious fuel/food stop before Marrakech. Diesel, sandwiches, prayer rooms.
Tips for Driving the A7
- Speed limit is 120 km/h on the motorway. Police speed checks are common — stay close to the limit.
- Toll booths take cash and card. Have small bills (50 or 100 MAD) ready.
- Fuel up before leaving Agadir. Stations are sparser than European motorways.
- Avoid driving after dark on the rural sections. The motorway is fine; smaller roads can have unlit obstacles.
