Atlas Mountains Drive: The Complete Tizi n'Tichka & High Atlas Guide (2026)
The Tizi n'Tichka pass is the road that turned the High Atlas from "remote unknown" into "Sunday afternoon drive from Marrakech." Since the 2017–2019 rebuild, it's the safest mountain pass in North Africa: 2,260 m summit, switchbacks tamed by widened lanes and proper barriers, asphalt smooth enough that a small Hyundai handles it without complaint. Most international tourists who do this drive say afterwards it was the highlight of their Morocco trip.
This guide covers the route, distances, fuel, weather, Aït Benhaddou, the Telouet detour, winter conditions, and which car category actually makes sense. Written by people who've driven it dozens of times in every season.
The Route — Three Starting Points
Starting from Agadir (most common for Euromotion customers): Drive Agadir → Marrakech on the A7 autoroute (273 km, 3h). Overnight in Marrakech. Continue Marrakech → Ouarzazate via Tizi n'Tichka (195 km, 4h). Aït Benhaddou is 30 km past Ouarzazate. Total one-way from Agadir to Aït Benhaddou: ~500 km across two days.
Starting from Marrakech: Skip the Agadir leg. Tizi n'Tichka begins from the city's south-east exit. 195 km to Ouarzazate, 30 km more to Aït Benhaddou. The first Agadir → Marrakech leg is covered in Agadir to Marrakech by car.
Marrakech → Tizi n'Tichka → Ouarzazate, Step by Step
Km 0 — Marrakech south-east exit. Get the N9 from the Marrakech ring road. Allow 20 minutes to clear the city.
Km 25 — Aït Ourir. Last big town before the climb. Last reliable fuel station for ~140 km. Fill up here.
Km 40 — Start of the climb. The road begins to rise. Olive groves give way to argan, then to bare rock and Berber villages clinging to cliffsides.
Km 80 — Tadart (mid-climb). A small village with roadside cafés. Bathroom stop, view over the valley.
Km 105 — Tizi n'Tichka summit (2,260 m). Marked with a small monument. Park on the wide shoulder, take photos. On a clear day you can see snow on the Toubkal massif.
Km 110 — Turn-off to Telouet (optional 1.5h round-trip). Side road descends 20 km west to the partly restored Telouet kasbah. Worth the detour if you have time.
Km 195 — Ouarzazate. Small town with chain hotels (Ibis, Le Berbère Palace) and riads from €40–€90/night. Most tourists either overnight here or push on to Aït Benhaddou (30 km further).
What Car You Actually Need
- Economy, Automatic, SUV, 7-seater — all handle Tizi n'Tichka without modification. The road is paved end-to-end.
- SUV is more comfortable on the switchbacks because of higher seating and slightly softer suspension. Reduces driver fatigue on the 4-hour stretch.
- Manual vs automatic — both work. Automatic is easier on the long descents.
For most couples and small families, the SUV from €32/day is the sweet spot. For solo travellers, an Automatic from €30/day is fine. For groups, the 7-seater family car works — just plan extra time at viewpoints.
Aït Benhaddou — The UNESCO Stop
30 km south-east of Ouarzazate is Aït Benhaddou, the fortified earthen ksar that's appeared in Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and roughly half of Hollywood's Sahara epics.
- Free entry to the ksar itself. Small fee (10 MAD) to enter individual restored buildings inside.
- Parking: large lot on the modern side of the river, 10 MAD/day. Walk across the (usually dry) riverbed.
- Time on site: 1.5–2.5 hours. The climb to the top takes 20 minutes one way.
- Best light: sunrise or sunset. Midday flat light works but is hot in summer.
- Lunch: the small cafés just outside the ksar serve good tagines for ~80 MAD (€7.50).
The Telouet Kasbah Detour (Optional)
A 20 km side road off the N9 near the pass summit leads to Telouet — once the seat of the powerful Glaoui clan. The kasbah is partly ruined but the painted reception halls are intact and astonishing.
- Side road is paved but narrow. Drive at 40 km/h.
- 1.5 hours round-trip from the N9. Entry fee 20 MAD.
- Skip in heavy rain — the side road can flood briefly.
For first-time visitors with limited time, prioritise Aït Benhaddou. Telouet is the under-visited gem for return travellers.
Winter Atlas — What Changes
December to March, the Atlas is at its most beautiful and occasionally its most dangerous. The summit can be snowed in for 1–3 days at a time after major storms.
- Check the forecast via Maroc Météo the morning before your drive.
- If snow is in the 24-hour forecast, postpone. The pass becomes genuinely dangerous in active snow.
- If snow is on the ground but no fresh storm, the road is usually clear within 12 hours. Drive carefully.
- Snow chains are very rarely needed. If conditions require chains, the road is usually already closed.

FAQ
What's the drive time over the Tizi n'Tichka pass?
Marrakech to Ouarzazate is 195 km and takes 4 hours including viewpoint stops. The pass summits at 2,260 m. From Agadir, add the A7 leg first (3h) for ~7h total — most tourists overnight in Marrakech first.
Do I need a 4×4 for the Atlas drive?
No. Tizi n'Tichka was fully rebuilt and widened 2017–2019. The road is paved, two lanes each way, with safety barriers. Any car handles it. An SUV is more comfortable but not required.
Is the Atlas drive safe in winter?
Generally yes, occasionally no. Heavy snow can close the pass for 1–3 days in Jan–Feb. Check Maroc Météo before you commit. If snow is in the forecast, postpone.
Should I stop at Aït Benhaddou?
Yes. The UNESCO-listed ksar is 30 km past Ouarzazate. Used in Game of Thrones, Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia. Free entry, 2 hours on site is plenty.
Can I do Atlas + Aït Benhaddou in a single day from Marrakech?
Yes but it's a long day — 390 km round-trip, ~8h driving plus stops. We recommend an overnight in Aït Benhaddou or Ouarzazate.
What about the Telouet kasbah detour?
A 20 km side road off the N9 near the summit leads to the partly restored Telouet kasbah. Add 1.5 hours. Worth it for the architecture. Skip in heavy rain.
Can I drive the Atlas with my Moroccan rental car if I rented from Agadir?
Yes — Euromotion rentals come with unlimited mileage. Drive freely across the High Atlas, no per-km charges, no geographic restrictions.
What's the best month to drive the Atlas?
April–June and September–October — clear weather, daylight runs late, no snow risk. December–March: scenic but check weather daily.
