Driving in Morocco with a US License: The American Tourist's Guide (2026)
Yes — your US state driver's license is valid in Morocco. Whether it was issued in California, Texas, New York, Florida, or any other state, you can rent a car, drive freely as a tourist for up to 12 months, and present the licence at any Gendarmerie Royale checkpoint. The United States and Morocco are both signatories to the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, which makes the licence recognition automatic.
You do not need an International Driving Permit. The travel guides that still say "you must have one" are recycling pre-2000s advice. We're a Morocco-based rental brand and we've handled thousands of American customers.
Direct Answer: Yes, Your State License Is Valid
Three things to know:
- Your US state-issued driver license is the accepted document. No translation, no state-specific notarisation, no extra step at the rental counter.
- The 1949 Geneva Convention is the legal basis. Both the US and Morocco signed it. A state license works here for tourist stays under one year.
- An IDP is optional. Useful if you're nervous or planning a year-plus stay. Not required for a holiday.
A practical note: Morocco drives on the right side of the road, same as every US state. Steering wheel on the left. Your muscle memory translates directly — no left-hand-drive switch like the UK or Ireland.
When You DO Want an International Driving Permit
You don't need one. The cases where it's still useful:
- You're staying longer than 12 months. After a year, you should switch to a Moroccan licence.
- Your driver license is in a non-Latin script. US state licenses are in English, so this doesn't apply to most readers.
- You feel more comfortable with extra paperwork. The IDP is cheap and quick to get in the US.
How to Get a US IDP from AAA
In person at AAA:
- Visit any AAA branch. You don't need to be a AAA member.
- Bring: your current US state driver license, two passport-sized photos (1×1 inch), and $20.
- Choose the 1949 Convention version, not the 1968 Convention. Morocco accepts only 1949.
- You receive the IDP on the spot. Valid for one year.
By mail: The same documents, $20, sent to AAA's national office. Processing time is 10–15 business days. The other authorised issuer is AATA (American Automobile Touring Alliance) — identical process and fee.
Warning: There is no online US IDP. Anyone offering one online for $50–$100 is selling a fake. Stick to AAA or AATA.
US Auto Insurance: It Almost Certainly Doesn't Cover Morocco
Your standard US auto policy from Geico, State Farm, Allstate, USAA, or Progressive covers the United States and sometimes parts of Canada and Mexico. Morocco is not on the list — not for any major US carrier.
What actually covers you:
- The Moroccan third-party insurance bundled into your rental. Included in the price at Euromotion. Legally required to drive in Morocco.
- Optional Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) at pickup. Small daily fee.
- Premium US credit card rental cover sometimes includes "international" rental — but Morocco is excluded by Amex Platinum's Premium Car Rental Protection, Chase Sapphire Reserve's primary rental insurance, and most others. Check the actual cardholder agreement before assuming.
- Standalone travel insurance (Allianz, World Nomads, IMG) sometimes offers rental car add-ons valid in Morocco.
What Car Rental Agencies Will (and Won't) Ask For
At Euromotion, the document checklist for American customers at Agadir airport is exactly three items:
- Your US state driver license. Front and back. We photograph it, then hand it back.
- Your passport. Required by Moroccan law.
- Your booking confirmation. Email or WhatsApp, printed or on your phone.
What we don't ask for: an IDP, a credit card (we hold zero deposit), a second form of US ID, a copy of your US auto insurance.
At a Moroccan Police Checkpoint with a US License
The Gendarmerie Royale runs routine checkpoints on most inter-city Moroccan roads. As a US tourist:
- The officer flags you to stop. Pull over, lower the window, switch off the radio.
- He asks for "papers" or "permis." Hand over your US state license, the rental contract, and your passport.
- He glances at them, possibly asks where you're going, then waves you on.
Officers don't ask if your license is "valid in Morocco" or request an IDP. They accept US state licenses without comment — they've seen thousands. Never offer money proactively — bribes are illegal.
Specific State Licenses — Do Any Have Issues?
No. Every US state-issued driver license is treated identically by Moroccan authorities. We've personally handled customers with licenses from California, Texas, New York, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, Washington, Arizona, and every other state. US territory licenses (Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam) are also accepted.
If your state license is the older non-REAL-ID version, Morocco doesn't care — REAL ID is a US domestic flying requirement, not an international driving one.
Three Real American Customer Stories
Jessica from Brooklyn, NY. Landed in Agadir for a 10-day surf-and-culture trip. Picked up an Economy with her New York state license. Stopped once at a checkpoint near Inezgane — handed over the license and passport, was waved on within 20 seconds. No IDP, no problem.
The Chen family from San Francisco, CA. Three drivers, all on California licenses, all named on the same Euromotion 7-seater (free). Two weeks across Marrakech, Essaouira, and Atlas. Zero documentation issues at four checkpoints.
David from Austin, TX. Booked an Automatic SUV for an Atlas-and-desert trip. Texas license only, no IDP. His US auto policy (Geico) explicitly excluded Morocco; he added our CDW at pickup. No claims, smooth trip.

FAQ
Is my US driver license valid in Morocco?
Yes. A US state-issued driver license is accepted by Moroccan authorities for tourist stays up to one year, under the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic. Any state — California, Texas, New York, all of them.
Do I need an International Driving Permit for Morocco as a US citizen?
No. For short tourist stays your state license is enough at car rental agencies and at Gendarmerie Royale police checkpoints. An IDP is a translation document, not a legal requirement.
How do I get a US IDP from AAA?
Visit any AAA branch or apply by mail. You need your US driver license, two passport-sized photos, and $20. AAA issues the IDP same-day in branch, or within ~2 weeks by mail. Choose the 1949 Convention version for Morocco.
Does my US auto insurance cover me in Morocco?
Almost never. Standard US auto policies — Geico, State Farm, Allstate, Progressive — cover the US and sometimes Canada/Mexico, but not Morocco. The Moroccan rental includes third-party insurance; you can add optional damage cover at pickup.
What about my credit card's rental car insurance?
Most US credit card rental cover excludes Morocco. Amex Platinum Premium Car Rental Protection covers selected countries — Morocco is not on the list. Check the cardholder agreement carefully before relying on it.
What do Moroccan police actually ask for at a checkpoint?
Your driver license, the rental car contract, and your passport. The US state license is what they expect. They do not request an IDP.
Do I need to drive on the left or the right in Morocco?
Right side, same as the United States. Steering wheels are on the left of the car. If you can drive in any US state, the muscle memory translates immediately.
What if I'm fined in Morocco? Will it affect my US license?
Moroccan fines do not transfer to US state DMVs. On-the-spot fines for minor offences are typically $15–$30 in cash. Pay them locally to avoid complications at the border.
